Super Junior Kyuhyun’s Father At Risk of Being Sentenced to imprisonment for 1 Month Due to Public Health Law

Super Junior Kyuhyun’s Father At Risk of Being Sentenced to imprisonment for 1 Month Due to Public Health Law

Super Junior member Kyuhyun’s father has found himself in legal trouble. His father operates a guest house in Seoul and the guesthouse is operating without proper business licenses, in violation of public health laws. Kyuhyun’s father was booked without detention by Seoul police for allegedly receiving guests at his guesthouse without having the proper guesthouse permits. Guesthouses in Korea are meant as a type of lodging for tourists, where they can experience Korean family culture. According to police, M Guesthouse is a six-story building with only one floor designated and permitted to be operated as lodging facilities. The rest of the floors were to be used as study rooms. However, police found that aside from an underground parking garage and a café area, all the floors in the building were being rented out to guests as lodging. Kyuhyun has mentioned M Guesthouse on broadcasts and it was a venue for Super Junior events, such as a fan signing for Kyuhyun. In response to this incident, Kyuhyun’s agency SM Entertainment released this statement: “As this is Kyuhyun’s father’s first business, this situation arose because he failed to understand all the regulations. If there are areas that are problematic, he will immediately correct them.” Operating an unauthorized guesthouse lodging facility is subject to a fine of up to 10 million won (approx. 10,000 USD) or imprisonment up to one year. Police shared that “There has been a rise of guesthouses operating without proper permits, by falsely stating only one floor is for guest lodging or that the rooms are study rooms. We will be cracking down on these violations.
